As you know, I want to become a journalist as a segue to becoming the ruler of the universe. In order to be a good journalist, I have to stay abreast on the latest in the field. I recently read a mini-book by Eric Newton of the Knight Foundation called Searchlights and Sunglasses: Field Notes from the Digital Age of Journalism. Newton gives readers a nice overview of the history of human communication and projects what he believes the digital landscape will become. Full disclosure, he thinks the Singularity is coming, which I don’t like to think about for the sake of my sanity. The book also goes into career prospects in journalism: they exist but will differ from the positions our predecessors had and will require different skills. Trust me. It was an interesting read and if you want to become a journalist, you have to read it. Print, broadcast, and digital platforms are becoming more and more seamless. Being able to hold your own on each one is imperative if you hope to thrive. Even if reporting isn’t on your horizon, it’s still nice to know what’s going on in the world. Check it out here!
I’ve been going to physical therapy for about a little over a month now and yesterday’s session really kicked my butt. I usually just do simple stretches and maybe ride the elliptical, but my physical therapist had a little something else in mind. She put me on this contraption that is part bike and part treadmill for about ten minutes. Then I did squats for three sets of ten, single leg balances on foam, calf stretches, leg lifts, and other various torture tactics. It was sooo painful, but I know that I’m going to look like a grown woman at the end of it all. (Beyonce voice: with my booty so fat, go girl!)
If I were ever on a game show and the host asked me to share something that most don’t know about me, I would say that I really enjoy memorizing rap lyrics. Typically, I hate rap – the angry, violent kind and the obscure “message” kind equally. I will be the awkward girl at the party not bringing it back, bending it over, or touching my toes, partly because I physically can’t, but also because I feel a bit unsettled watching how excited some of the guys get when they sing along to Lil Wayne’s misogynistic lyrics.
But, every month, when the full moon is nigh, I turn on Rick Ross and appreciate his ability to create an entire gangster persona on a lie. I might rock out to a little Waka Flocka (remember that guy?) and wish that I too, could do it with no hands. Suddenly, everything 2 Chainz says on the 17 million songs he’s featured in is hilarious. I love the bravado.
Oh, and along with neo-soul, I always hate conscious rap. Don’t let the fluffy ‘fro fool you.
Anyway, I’m in such a ratchet music mood that I’ve had Drake’s “All Me” on repeat all week. I just pretend to not hear when Big Sean tells that hoe to shut the f*ck up.
My Friday Fave is short and sweet and about my best friend Kristi! She’s definitely one of my most favorite people ever and today is her 25th birthday! We’ve been friends for much too long now and I just can’t seem to get rid of her. I guess we’re in it for the long haul! Here’s to many more years of shenanigans and friendship; you’ll always be my sister from another mister. <3
Me and the bestie! If you follow us on Instagram, you’ve seen this picture, but it’s totally appropriate!
