May 5th marked the latest installment of the annual Little Haiti Book Festival. This was my first time attending the fair and it was such a wonderful time!
The Little Haiti Book Festival is presented by the Miami Book Fair and this year they partnered with Sosyete Koukouy of Miami, Inc. The Little Haiti Book Festival is the Miami Book Fair’s commitment to highlighting the works of authors from Haiti and the Haitian diaspora through their ReadCaribbean programming. The festivities took place at the Little Haiti Cultural Complex and local bookstore Libreri Mapou. It featured live music, various vendors, literary panels, writing workshops, children’s activities, and of course books, books, and more books. And best of all, it was free!
My favorite part of the entire day was getting to meet fellow Haitian authors that I’ve interacted with online in real life including Jeff Noel, and Suze Guillaume and her son Edwin Bonilla, Jr.
I even had the pleasure of meeting Haitian activist Marleine Bastien and Dr. Michel Dodard.
But the moment that I lost my entire cool was when I spoke with THE Edwidge Danticat. Talk about epic!
I’m so happy that I was able to experience this amazing festival right in my own backyard. I can’t wait for next year! And I would be remiss if I didn’t give a very special shout out to my friend Stephanie for helping me out, particularly when I turned into a blubbering mess when I met Edwidge. She’s the real MVP!
